About the National Jewish Theatre Festival
Since January 2000, Guggenheim Entertainment has been working with the Jewish Community Centers and synagogues throughout the Bay Area to develop a high quality "Jewish Family Education Series". As a result of much discussion and exploration, we began the development of a new creative arts educational outreach program and are pleased to provide you with this preliminary concept inviting your participation.

The National Jewish Theatre Festival (NJTF), a professional company dedicated to the presentation of theatre that speaks of Jewish and multicultural issues, is active in the development and promotion of contemporary Jewish theatre promoting Jewish family life, learning, and sharing and reflecting Jewish themes and experiences throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.

Theatre transcends many levels of human experience and has profound effects on how we view the world. An image, a line, or a song can last a lifetime. The National Jewish Theatre Festival will seek to educate the community on themes of social and political importance by presenting year-round plays and musicals of Jewish theme and employing a company of professional actors, directors, and designers. They will produce theatre of the highest professional standards and provide a stage for the exploration of ideas that confront issues of humanity and community from the Jewish perspective including:

  • freedom of religious belief;
  • equal rights and equal justice;
  • and ethical values derived from Jewish religion, Jewish tradition and holidays, and history of the Jewish people and the State of Israel.

The company presents theatre of the highest artistic quality that reflects the Jewish experience past, present, and future; cultivates the creation of new American Jewish plays relevant to Jewish family life and values; provides high quality educational outreach opportunities; and presents a repertory consisting of plays and musicals with the mission of entertaining and promoting discussion within the family. NJTF provides a better understanding of Jewish culture within the community by working hand-in-hand with our sponsors to educate the Jewish community regarding the value of promoting and making use of Jewish theatre as a tool for Jewish continuity, understanding, education and as a bridge to the community at large.

The National Jewish Theatre Festival provides partnership and collaboration opportunities for synagogues and community centers throughout the greater San Francisco Bay Area to present the "Jewish Family Life Education Series" in song, dance, poetry, humor, and imagery celebrating the strength within us all. Each season, the National Jewish Theatre Festival will boast a collection of adventurous tales opening new possibilities for growth and change. Life enhancing themes of self discovery will be skillfully blended with wonder and wit. And, as with all Guggenheim Entertainment productions, audiences will leave feeling better about themselves than when they arrived. In addition to public performances, performances will be made available to schools for field trip opportunities. Working hand-in-hand with teachers and students, we will create a tool that opens children's minds and lets them see themselves, their families and the world in a new way.

Courage in exploring new plays and new ideas, openhearted support for a company that embraces all cultures, the goal of promoting an environment where family ideas and dreams are shared - - all make up the building blocks of the National Jewish Theater Festival. We invite you to join us in making the dramatic thrill of live entertainment a vital part of the region and a revitalizing part of our lives.

Upcoming Mainstage Productions

NJTF proudly announces the availability of these brand new musicals for your fundraisers or special events.
Each production in our series features live performances by Bay Area theatre professionals and a fully realized production design by the award-winning Bay Area theatrical production team that brought the San Francisco premiere "Schoolhouse Rock Live!" and hundreds of other regional theatre productions, to critical acclaim.

Songs of Hope

In the spring of 2004, NJTF will present a remarkable concert featuring "Songs of Hope: A Concert in Honor of Anne Frank". The first act will feature selections from the moving and memorable off-Broadway musical "Yours, Anne", based on the diary of the young author. Act two will feature the cast, made up of professional opera and musical theatre singers from the East and West Coasts, as they perform a collection of songs from every genre which inspire hope. In observance of Yom Hashoah, "Songs of Hope" will honor Anne Frank's memory as well as all of those who have had the courage to survive and inspire us to have hope.

The MeshugaNutcracker!

In December 2003, NJTF presented the world premiere of "The MeshugaNutcracker!" to delighted audiences during a limited 10 performance run. In 2004, the Bay Area can once again experience this witty, fun-filled and educational musical featuring an exceptional cast, superb score and enchanting sets and costumes. This new production has all the right ingredients for a very happy Chanukah: take the beautiful and melodious music from Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Ballet", mix in eight poignant and witty stories celebrating the miracle of Chanukah, and add a pinch of Chelm for flavor. Add twirling chanukiot and you'll have visions of sufganiot dancing in your head. Some might call in crazy, we call it... "The MeshugaNutcracker!"

For information about single tickets, group tickets, or about becoming a performance sponsor to use the production as a fund raiser, contact NJTF by phone: (877) 456-4849.

The Orphan Queen

In 2005, NJTF will present the West Coast professional premiere of the critically acclaimed new musical, "The Orphan Queen", a unique retelling of the captivating Biblical story of Esther, the basis of the Jewish holiday of Purim. The unfolding events of treachery, love, intrigue and faith, are presented in original songs woven together by lively, musical narrative which impressively blends such musical genres  as pop, classical, jazz and the blues. "The Orphan Queen" sends a strong feminist message about womens' finest hour in the Bible and entertains theatre-goers with compelling musical fair. Composer Cantor  Robbie Solomon, best known in his capacity as composer and member of the number one Jewish rock group SAFAM, has created a "don't miss" musical which brings to life Megilat Esther for families and children alike.

"Bible Women" and "Women of Valor"
Future NJTF endeavors include working with world renowned Broadway composer Elizabeth Swados to present an educational outreach program designed to celebrate the lives and accomplishments of historic Jewish Women. In collaboration with the Jewish Women's Archive and Ma'yan: the Jewish Women's Project, NJTF will make available these productions for special events and educational outreach. For more information please contact NJTF at newplays@njtf.org.

All NJTF productions feature live performances by Bay Area theatre professionals and fully realized sets with lighting, costumes, props and make-up designed and produced by the award-winning Bay Area theatrical production team that brought "Schoolhouse Rock Live!" to critical acclaim in San Francisco's Union Square.

    A Cooperative Partnership
Theatre transcends many levels of human experience and has profound effects on how we view the world. An image, a line, or a song can last a lifetime. Through the medium of theatre, we gain an appreciation for one another and an understanding of the differences that makes each of us strong.

The National Jewish Theatre Festival stands uniquely poised to empower family and classroom discussion. We have developed a number of services to take the performance beyond the curtain call:

    Pre-Performance Curriculum
We excite the audience by providing recommended pre-performance activities; the more you know, the better the show. This flyer has suggestions for pre-performance reading, listening and viewing, as well as discussion topics and questions to get everyone excited about the production.

    The Performance
As always, the audience can look forward to a thoroughly entertaining theatrical experience. Whether its a fresh look at an age-old classic or a brand new piece from the pens of award-winning playwrights and composers, audiences will delight in our intimate theatres stuffed with innovative sets and costumes and truly the best talent in the region.

    Post-Performance Discussions
After the performance, the audience will have the opportunity to discuss the issues and ideas presented in the play and explore the performance with the actors, staff and crew thus stimulating further discussion.

    Post-Performance Recommendations
Guests receive our comprehensive, easy-to-read Learning Guide, full of activities, discussion questions, and behind-the-scenes action and magic, all designed to continue the experience at home, at play, and in the classroom.

Here are some sample ways to utilize our productions:

    Buy a performance "outright"
Book an NJTF production as a headline event for your next fundraiser, perhaps to honor the outgoing board president or kick off a capital campaign. Combine the performance with dinner and an auction and your event is sure to be a hit. Or, book the performance as a family education program and offer free tickets to guests. Booking a performance "outright" allows your agency to tailor the event to suit your needs; charge as much or as little for tickets as you wish.

Host the performance as a "co-producer"
In this case, you would host a performance in partnership with NJTF. The booking fee is significantly lower and your agency shares in any profit.  NJTF works with the agency to make the performance as accesible as possible to guests by offering discounts for seniors, students, and children, as well as large parties or groups.

Fees for booking NJTF productions range from $3,500-$8,000 per performance, depending on the number of performances booked and whether the agency hosts the performance or buys it outright. For details, contact Scott by phone, (877) 456-4849 or email, programming@njtf.org.

    Educational Outreach Programs

Guggenheim Entertainment and the National Jewish Theatre Festival have been innovative in the use of the visual and performing arts in Jewish education. Programs are currently used for Jewish Day Schools, Synagogue Religious Schools, Jewish Community Centers, and summer camps. For more information please contact us or call (510)795-0570 for additional information.

The mission of our educational outreach programs is to utilize the techniques and skills learned through training and preparation in the visual and performing arts to build a better world and educate the Jewish mind and soul. The program provides students the opportunity to work hand-in-hand with fellow students and theatre professionals, while learning more about Judaism, Jewish values and ethics, and simultaneously building wonderful friendships with other students of varying ages and interests. While the experience does present aspiring performers with a unique acting, singing, and dance challenge, the point of the program is not to produce a musical. Instead, it is through the medium of theatre that students experience personal growth, learning and fun.

The National Jewish Theatre Festival develops its educational outreach programs to ensure students experience theatre dreams, dedication and discipline in a supportive professional atmosphere. However, just as important in our minds is the result that, regardless of acting ability, our students learn to draw on their own resources, becoming "cochavim (stars)" in all their endeavors - including those beyond the stage.

    NJTF Workshops
NJTF's dedicated and talented staff of educators are here to assist you in a variety of programs from year-round programs to one-day events and workshops. Allow our staff to work with yours to enhance programming already in place by bringing holidays, heroes, and happenings to life, or bring us in to customize a brand new program that can even culminate in a production featuring your students or members.

We've made a specialty of using the visual and performing arts to teach Judaica and can integrate our workshops into your religious school, Hebrew High, Shabbaton, Sunday programs, or special education events. Classes are available and designed for any and all age groups.

Proud parents share their opinions of NJTF Education programs
"Still recovering from the joy of watching the performances this weekend, I wanted to write the two of you to make sure you know how meaningful, educational and fun the experience was for my son, Ben. Your program taught him the importance and meaning of Jewish values in an incredibly fun way, such that he embraced that learning process. At home, he now talks about those values. He learned more about Jewish values from the Guggenheims than he has in three years of Sunday School. The process created a feeling of community for him that I never could have even imagined. Ben specifically told me that coming to rehearsals was like being at "home" for him. The connections/friendships he made with other participants will last for years, and make him feel so much more connected to Beth Am. It excited him to come to rehearsals. Frankly, no other extracurricular activity has ever evoked such passion. He literally cried during the car ride home last night, because the program is over! With all my heart, I thank you for your commitment to our children's Jewish education. You deserve such credit for your commitment, hard work and creativity." Lorraine Brown, Parent

"Thanks for a wonderful experience! Both Max and Maya had a wonderful time this year. Between teaching the kids, writing the show, coaching, directing, and keeping everyone focused on the tasks at hand, plus all of the administrative and organizational work (not to mention dealing w/ 50 parents), you guys must put in about 60 hours a week each. Our kids both learned loads in a fun and painless manner. Thank you so very, very much!!" '" Julie and Ben Lloyd, Parents

"First, as a parent I want to thank you for the wonderful learning, the wonderful sense of community that was created among the kids, and the wonderful enthusiasm that everyone exhibited in the last week and throughout the last 4 months. Sarah was totally high when she came home last night - then collapsed in a teary heap saying over and over, "I can't believe it's done!" I truly have not seen her have more fun and more drawn in than she was with this show. As an educator, I think the way the kids learned - the focus, seriousness and joy they brought to this endeavor is amazing and exciting. I only wish we could infuse that into all the teaching and learning we do. I heard more than one parent comment on how much their child had learned and how much they felt a part of the community in a way they never had before. Todah Rabah v'l'hitraot!" ~ Ellen Stromberg, Parent

"We just wanted to express our heartfelt thanks for a most wonderful experience for our daughter, Mira, and all her family and friends that came to see the show as well. How you produced such a creative script from all those great songs, and gave so many of the children a chance to shine - you truly are masters at what you do! And it couldn't be clearer that you all seem to have a genuine love of working with kids! How lucky we are to have you share your talents with our children these past years. I only hope and pray that you will continue to share yourselves with us again." ~ Debra Laybhen, parent

"We were so pleased with every aspect of the highly professional production of 'Piece of the Puzzle.' Samantha learned more about Judaica in four months than she has in the last 4 years in such a painless, enjoyable format. I am very impressed with your teaching style, patience and dedication to detail. It was a huge job and you did it beautifully. Thank you for bringing us so much joy and pride in our child. You brought out the best!" ~ Robin Press, Parent

    ATTENTION: Parents!
Why is HaBimah the place for YOUR CHILD this summer?

Because you want him to sing and dance and put on shows with other kids, instead of with the family pets. Because you think your daughter might be the next Shirley Temple. Because even though you don't think your kid will be the next Shirley Temple, she's talented and smart and you want more for her than a summer in front of the TV. Because he'll make new friends and strengthen existing friendships. Because they'll get a great Judaic and theatrical education.

Because there's no place else like it.

    ATTENTION: Kids!
Why is HaBimah the place for YOU this summer?

Because you like to sing and dance and put on shows for your family, even though your dog steals the spotlight. Because you think you might be the next Jim Carrey. Because even though you don't think you'll be the next Jim Carrey, you want to do something more this summer than just play video games. Because you actually want to make a difference in the world and have a good time doing it. Because you want a great experience where you'll learn more about your Jewish heritage, have a great time, make new friends and on top of all that, perform in a fully-produced musical.

Because there's no place else like it.

    Because HaBimah is for you!

Instead, our Acting Studio, Voice Studio, Movement Studio, and Page to Stage curriculum will have students begging for more as they learn from our gifted staff in an entirely innovative and entertaining way.

Acting Studio: Designed to stimulate imagination and creativity, students will work to increase their ability to respond creatively and spontaneously to challenges of stage performance through improvisation, theatre games, role playing, character analysis, and the development of self expression.

Voice Studio: Using the musical styles of rock 'n roll, country western, Broadway show tunes, and more, students will explore the fundamentals of voice, character study, and the motivation behind a song; a great way to prepare mind and body for learning proper singing technique.

Movement Studio: Students will learn to move and groove as they learn to feel more comfortable about using their bodies. Through original choreography, improvisation, and exercises, students will develop physical awareness and sensitivity of space, time, and action.

Page to Stage: See how a story goes from the page to the stage. Here, students will learn to analyze written stories and the basics of creating dialogue, oral interpretation, recognizing themes, developing concepts, and building characters.

In all of our Core Classes, students will enjoy the highest caliber of arts training available for young people while inspiring creative thinking, self-confidence, and good communication skills.

    Rehearsals/Production:
Placed in groups with students of all ages, students will participate in rehearsals for their final production. Rehearsals will consist of exploring the themes presented in the text, learning the music, the choreography, and the staging for the production. Students will also participate in designing and building the costumes and scenery for the production, and will have the opportunity to better understand how a theatrical production is marketed and funded as they participate in ticket sales and advertisements for the playbill.

    Electives:
Students will have the opportunity to choose from a variety of elective classes. Past electives have included stage combat, stage design, dance styles, puppetry, circus arts, and more, The electives will introduce the students to the many elements of theatrical production and the complimentary roles of actor, designer, and director.

Every Friday students will join together to welcome the Sabbath with an engaging and fun Shabbat celebration. In addition, students will participate in daily morning and afternoon song circles and delight in Maccabiah (Theatre Olympics), a "HaBimah!" highlight: outdoor fun in the sun and indoor competitive theatre games to foster creative teamwork and play.

    Showcase:
To culminate each four week session, students will apply what they've learned by participating in performances of a fully mounted musical production. With dozens of roles, each student will have a chance to shine and demonstrate the skills they've acquired and challenge themselves individually and as part of an ensemble. Performances will be held each session on the last Wednesday and Thursday at 7pm. All performances are open to the public. Each student will receive four complimentary tickets.
